It is maybe not very difficult to make X work (though I'm not sure there are X
servers that are designed to work on MMU-less systems), but it will be hard to
get good performance and responsiveness out of it.
Openmoko, for example, uses X and has major problems about the GUI being slow
and lacking responsiveness that are certainly attributable to it.
Compared to a X-based GUI, DOpE:
- is elegant, light and fast
- has mechanisms to guarantee responsiveness
- has no problem working on a MMU-less system
- is trivial to port
You're totally right about the application support; if you want to run
traditional PC applications on Milkymist this will help. But for running my
own embedded VJ application, not using X seems to be a relevant choice.
